Background
This project seeks to explore how we can leverage the climate conditions surrounding our manufacturing facilities to extract water from the environment around us such as through atmospheric water extraction, dew/fog/rainwater harvesting, or even desalination.
Reducing the demand on municipal water will cause a reduced demand on local watersheds.
What we're looking for
PepsiCo is seeking to determine the availability and feasibility of low energy water extraction technologies for use as potable water in food and beverage manufacturing plants.
If cost-effective and proven to be safe, this water could be used in product. An intermediate goal is to reduce the amount of water used to produce product in manufacturing plants.
Our must-have requirements are:
- The water extraction technology is low-cost, with a target of $25-50 per 1000 gallons. If this is not achievable, the applicant must have ideas as to how to lower the cost.
- The technology produces potable water quality (per EPA drinking water standards).
- Applicants are able to define sources of energy that can be utilized (i.e., waste heat at our facilities, renewable, etc.) and the cost.

- Applicants are able to quantify the impact of climate variation on water extraction volume.
- The technology is ready to be piloted.

Our nice-to-have's are:
- The technology should not be larger than the rooftop space available on a beverage plant, which is ~ 4,645 – 9,290 square meters.
- The technology ideally will be adaptable to most climates.
- The applicant ideally will be able to partner in customizing solutions.
- The water will be ideally used in products, in which case all equipment would need to be capable of obtaining NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) 61 certification.

What's out of scope:
- Water reuse processes
- Use of municipal wastewater
- Water efficiency tactics
What we can offer you
Benefits:
Funding is proposal-dependent and typically ranges from $25,000 - $75,000 for a 6 month proof-of-concept.
Selected researchers may have access to one of our manufacturing sites for completing a pilot with the technology.
Work directly with our team of scientists who can support evaluating competitive edge of the technologies and bringing new products to market at massive scale.
