Long-lasting lawn care for selective weed control

Background

Current outdoor care products for lawns are essential for maintaining a healthy and vibrant lawn, providing nutrients, promoting grass growth, and controlling weeds. These products, typically including fertilizers and selective herbicides, target specific lawn care needs. However, many existing products often require frequent reapplication to maintain their effectiveness, leading to higher costs, more time spent on lawn care, and a greater environmental footprint. Additionally, some existing solutions raise concerns regarding safety, particularly around children, pets, and the environment due to the chemicals involved in their formulations.

This highlights a critical need for innovative lawn care solutions that offer extended efficacy, reducing the frequency of applications while enhancing safety for both users and the environment.

What we're looking for

We are looking for innovative lawn care solutions that offer extended weed control and enhanced lawn health with fewer applications. Our focus is on innovating within the selective weed control and prevention categories by introducing solutions that provide extended efficacy, greater safety, and a superior user experience.

Solutions of interest include:
  • Slow-release, selective herbicides that provide weed control over several weeks, regardless of weather conditions and moisture levels.
  • Pre-emergent weed control that prevents weed seeds from germinating in the lawn.
  • Integrated weed and feed systems that combine fertilization with effective weed control.
  • Smart-release technology that adapts herbicide release based on environmental conditions.
Our must-have requirements are:
  • Target weeds without harming the grass or other desired plants.
  • Safe for use around children, pets, and wildlife, with minimal environmental impact.
  • Applicable to lawns of various sizes, from small residential gardens to large commercial properties.
Our nice-to-have's are:
  • Easy to apply, ideally without requiring specialized equipment.
  • Formulated with sustainable or organic materials.
  • Weed and feed functionality (dual action).
What's out of scope:
  • Non-selective herbicides that kill all vegetation, not just targeted weeds.
  • Short-term solutions requiring application once a week or more frequently (e.g. daily).
Acceptable technology readiness levels (TRL):
Levels 3-7

Q.
We have developed slowly biodegradable straw mats that can be doped with fertilizer for slow release, and have been shown to prevent weed emergence. We propose to embed grass seed in the upper side of mats, with germinating roots penetrating the mats into the soil, but precluding weed emergence for at least 2 seasons. Is this appropriate for your call?
