Natural ingredients for appetite suppression and “food noise” reduction

Background

Our brand is specifically designed to support individuals at every stage of their weight loss journey. This includes those interested in losing weight, as well as individuals currently on GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) medications or transitioning off them.

GLP-1s have gained prominence as effective weight loss medications. These drugs, such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, work by mimicking the effects of the hormone GLP-1, which regulates appetite and glucose metabolism. Users often experience reduced cravings and a quieter mind—less of what they refer to as “food noise”—after starting GLP-1 medications.

While there are plenty of solutions available for those interested in weight loss and an increasing variety of food options for GLP-1 users, there’s a noticeable gap in food and beverage support for individuals coming off these medications. When GLP-1 users discontinue their medication, they face a transition period. Suddenly, the drug’s appetite-suppressing effects diminish, and they must navigate their food choices without that support. This transition can be challenging, as the “food noise” returns—those intrusive thoughts about what to eat, how to satisfy cravings, and constant preoccupation with food.

Unfortunately, 66% of the weight lost is regained within 12 months of stopping the medication. We are thus looking for effective dietary solutions that help consumers maintain their weight loss progress whether achieved with or without medication.

What we're looking for

We’re actively searching for novel and natural ingredient solutions that can reduce “food noise” and effectively suppress appetite, similar to the effect of anti-obesity medications (drugs), such as GLP-1s and GIPs. Our ideal solution should not only curb “food noise” with high efficacy, but also be adaptable to our existing supply chain, cost-effective, and suitable for implementation within the frozen food, beverage, and snacking categories.

Solutions of interest include:
  • Exploration of appetite-suppressing plant-extracts
  • Fermentates and other bioactive compounds with appetite-regulating properties
  • Traditional herbal solutions from around the global
  • Fiber-enriched and/or protein-based formulations that naturally reduce appetite
Our must-have requirements are:
  • Show potential or preliminary evidence of effectiveness in reducing “food noise” and suppressing appetite.
  • Indicate potential for sustainable or long-term use without undesirable side effects.
  • Solutions should ultimately allow for integration into frozen food, snack, and beverage product formats.
  • Economically viable for large-scale integration and production.
Our nice-to-have's are:
  • Novel and support clean label ingredients: natural, recognizable.
  • Commercially available or about to be commercialized.
  • Enhance flavor or add a pleasant taste profile.
  • Maintain or enhance desirable textures after frozen lifecycle.
  • GRAS approved, FDA approved, and Food Safe with no negative effects.
  • Withstand the entire frozen food lifecycle: cooking, freezing, reheating.
  • Sustainable (eco-friendly sourcing, minimal environmental impact).
  • Solutions available in dry, liquid or powder formats.
What's out of scope:
  • Contain nanoparticles/compounds and artificial colors and flavors (as an ingredient and or within processing aids of the ingredient).
  • Require behavioral intervention or personalized nutrition plans.
  • Require developing pharmaceutical drugs or synthetic compounds similar to GLP-1 medications. We are solely focused on natural ingredients suitable for frozen food, beverage, or snack applications.
  • Contain commonly known allergens.
Acceptable technology readiness levels (TRL):
Levels 3-8

Q.
What are the terms and conditions proposed around intellectual property ownership, exclusivity, and ownership of the product if one were to win this RFP?
4
A.
In most cases the proposer would maintain their IP. Depending on the format of the solution we would negotiate what makes sense for both parties. For example, the most straight forward would be if you could supply an ingredient and we could buy it. But if you have a technology that needs to be used by someone to then manufacture an ingredient they may need to license or buy the IP from you.

Q.
We have a potential ingredient that is TRL 7/8 - have queries about clean label. Have significant body of underpinning research and near market opportunity. Would like to discuss further.
