Background

Consumers are increasingly seeking more environmentally responsible product choices.

We are looking for unique solutions to directly transform fatty acid methyl esters (or triglycerides) into a key raw material, linear alpha olefins, for later conversion to surfactants that can be utilized in consumer products. The solution could be chemical or non-chemical (e.g. biotransformation), processes, technologies, materials (e.g. catalysts) and/or services.

If you have a solution and want to partner with us, please submit a summary of your solution, approach and/or technologies. Please indicate how you would propose pilot testing your solution. We look forward to partnering with you. All ideas and submissions will be fully reviewed.

What we're looking for

Technologies that are either demonstrated at lab scale, demonstrated at pilot (scalable), or “off the shelf” or “near-ready”. We would prefer an “off the shelf” or “near-ready” solution. We would also consider emerging technology(ies) as a possible co-development. A solution that is scalable. Only non-confidential information is acceptable.

Solutions of interest include:
  • Direct chemical conversion of fatty acid methyl esters to linear alpha olefins
  • Direct biogenic conversion of fatty acid methyl esters to linear alpha olefins
  • Other 1-step solutions for converting fatty acid methyl esters to linear alpha olefins
Our must-have requirements are:
  • Direct (1-step) conversion
  • Starting compounds must be fatty acid methyl esters or triglycerides
  • Resultant product are linear alpha-olefins with unsaturation in the 1-position. If a mixture of isomers, the mixture must be >90% with unsaturation in the 1-position.
What's out of scope:
  • We are not interested in solutions to internal olefins (whether pure or mixtures).
  • We are not interested in solutions starting from fatty alcohols.
  • We are not interested in olefins with fewer than eight carbons and olefins with greater than sixteen carbons.
Acceptable technology readiness levels (TRL):
Levels 4-9

Q.
Are you looking for work that has already been performed or is it ok if the research starts now?
1
A.
Work already done or in progress is acceptable, technical rational and results will be reviewed. However, proposals for research put forward with technical rationale will be considered as well.

Q.
Would a biogenic application be considered if its technically two-three steps but all in the same "pot" so to speak? Or are you only looking for applications that are one reaction?
1
A.
Fewer steps are preferred. However, single step or multiple steps in one reactor or series of reactors will be considered. Conversion, yield, and selectivity are all important metrics for the desired transformation.
