Background

Altium Packaging has a proven track record in manufacturing blow-molded rigid plastic packaging (bottles) for a variety of markets. Our B2B customers continue to demand lighter weight packaging, to reduce costs and to meet their sustainability goals. 

 

Altium’s goal is to offer dramatically lighter weight packaging to our customers to maintain a competitive position in the market.

What we're looking for

Altium is seeking materials, additives, processing technologies, and design techniques to enable lighter weight packaging.

Solutions of interest include:
  • Materials and additives that allow for lighter weight packaging
  • Non-material-based solutions, such as structural designs, textures and engraving techniques
  • Extrusion tooling and extrusion processing technologies
  • Mold construction, materials and technologies that facilitate lightweighting
  • Use of secondary materials, such as labels, to combined with a molded part to lightweight a package
Our must-have requirements are:
  • The final product (after partnering with Altium) will need to pass these must-have requirements. Ideally, applicants would have information regarding how their solution will enable these requirements in a finished product:
  • At least a 15% decrease in part weight with no impact to product performance
  • Bottle must be manufactured using a blow-molding process
  • Compatible with wide manufacturing process window
  • Compatible with PET #1, HDPE #2 or PP #5 resin identification code (RIC)
Our nice-to-have's are:
  • Cost parity with existing resins
  • Extrusion blow-molding (EBM) using a reciprocating screw platform (such as Uniloy) preferred, as well as shuttle and wheel processes. Other molding processes will be considered, such as: injection molding, injection blow-molding (IBM), injection stretch blow-molding (ISBM)
  • Does not impact organoleptic or sensory attributes of product contents
  • FDA food contact approved
  • A solution that reduces energy consumption as part of the material’s overall lifecycle analysis (LCA)
  • Technical Readiness Level: We are seeking a solution that falls within Level 3-5 level, but a wider range may be considered.
What's out of scope:
  • Compostable solutions (if they introduce additives or materials that may be detrimental to the recycle stream)
  • Biodegradable solutions (if they introduce additives or materials that may be detrimental to the recycle stream)
  • Materials and resulting products that are deemed “detrimental” to recycling by The Association of Plastics Recyclers (APR). See: https://plasticsrecycling.org/apr-design-guide

A range of $25,000 - $100,000 USD is available for a proof-of-concept and development in 2024, with a potential for follow-on funding.
Expertise
Work directly with our team at Altium who can support with bringing new products to market at massive scale. Altium experts may consider providing support for the project up to 6 hours per week.
Facilities and Services
Altium will consider using various extrusion blow-molding machines for sampling purposes at an Altium facility or trusted 3rd party vendor. Number of trials and locations TBD based on the proposal.

It seems impossible to respond to this without knowing which polymer? There are many food grade polymers already, and asking for all potential polymers to be in scope seems a challenge.

Hello Brian and thanks for your interest. Altium primarily uses HDPE and to a lessor but still important extent, PP and PET in our rigid packaging (bottles and caps). We decided that lightweight improvements using those three types of resins would be a must-have requirement. We mold bottles for a wide variety of markets, including food and beverage. We decided we would make food contact resins nice-to-have for this opportunity. I hope this helps and if not please don’t hesitate to reach out.
