Background

one • fıve is a biomaterials research, development and scale-up company, providing faster, affordable, tailored solutions with measurable environmental impact.

As part of our recent developments for several customers we are looking to replace conventional layers to coat directly on papers (i.e., "primers") with renewable materials.

In formulating a comprehensive solution for sustainable and potentially food-safe packaging, the call for proposal incorporates requirements for primers within the broader context of water-based dispersion coating development. Aside from the crucial demand for superior adhesion to paper and compatibility with various coating techniques, a heightened emphasis is also in ultra-high OTR barrier and heat resistance.

What we're looking for

We are looking for a water-based dispersion coating solution that strongly adheres to paper substrates and achieves ultra-high oxygen barrier. The coating solution should demonstrate heat resistance (for subsequent extrusion applications).

Our must-have requirements are:
  • Viscosity: 25s-40s according to to DIN 53211, Ø 4 mm, 20°C or viscosity lower than 600 cP
  • Thermal stability of at least 300˚C
  • Components do not interfere with paper recycling (e.g. wax)
  • OTR <1 cc/sqm/24hrs in standard conditions
Our nice-to-have's are:
  • For our eventual solution, we seek the following performance after applying 3 gsm dried coated layer on paper: OTR<=1 at 23˚C, 50%RH and WVTR<=1 at 23˚C, 85%RH

  • Ideally biobased and/or biodegradable

  • Approved food contact

  • Good adhesion on paper and clay coated paper (adhesion strength higher than 5N/15mm)

  • TRL 6+ would be ideal (but solutions that do not meet this maturity are still welcomed)

What's out of scope:
  • PVDC, PFAS (Polyvinylidene chloride, per- and polyfluorinated substances)

  • Siliconising agents

  • Components that are not suitable for (or interfere with) paper recycling according to CEPI guideline (e.g., components creating microstickiness and visual impurities in paper recycling)

  • Wax dispersion (incl. microcrystalline waxes)

Acceptable technology readiness levels (TRL):
Levels 5-9

Hello, We developed a nanocellulose with FR properties. I believe our nanocellulose could meet most of your criteria but we never had the opportunity to test it. IMO our TRL is 4. Do we still qualify for your call?

Hello, thank you for your interest. We have the following questions to help us evaluate your technology. -Is "FR" meaning fire retardant? -Type of nanocellulose (fibers or particles) -Formulation (powder or dispersion); how much is available (g vs. kg) -Solid content, viscosity -Expected technology for application -How is it stabilized on the substrate (physical interaction, immobilization via binder etc.) -List of chemicals used for preparation (to assess food conformity) -What is the current OTR performance of the technology? Tested system? How is it coated? -What is the thickness of the coating in the tested system? -Is there any component in their tech which affect the recyclability of paper? e.g. visual impurities, wax, etc. Thanks in advance.
