As part of our recent developments for several customers we are looking to replace conventional layers to coat directly on papers (i.e., "primers") with renewable materials.
In formulating a comprehensive solution for sustainable and potentially food-safe packaging, the call for proposal incorporates requirements for primers within the broader context of water-based dispersion coating development. Aside from the crucial demand for superior adhesion to paper and compatibility with various coating techniques, a heightened emphasis is also in ultra-high OTR barrier and heat resistance.
We are looking for a water-based dispersion coating solution that strongly adheres to paper substrates and achieves ultra-high oxygen barrier. The coating solution should demonstrate heat resistance (for subsequent extrusion applications).
For our eventual solution, we seek the following performance after applying 3 gsm dried coated layer on paper: OTR<=1 at 23˚C, 50%RH and WVTR<=1 at 23˚C, 85%RH
Ideally biobased and/or biodegradable
Approved food contact
Good adhesion on paper and clay coated paper (adhesion strength higher than 5N/15mm)
TRL 6+ would be ideal (but solutions that do not meet this maturity are still welcomed)
PVDC, PFAS (Polyvinylidene chloride, per- and polyfluorinated substances)
Siliconising agents
Components that are not suitable for (or interfere with) paper recycling according to CEPI guideline (e.g., components creating microstickiness and visual impurities in paper recycling)
Wax dispersion (incl. microcrystalline waxes)
